What It Actually Took

We spent years inside the fashion industry before we were ready to start this. That time is where we learned what separates a good garment from a forgettable one, and it's what made us unwilling to build Waldruh the easy way.

We started with a patternmaker. Through connections built over those years, we met Simon, a legend of his craft who's been designing patterns for clients in the heart of Manhattan's garment district for over 40 years. Simon became our source of truth, the person we ran every question through: fit, fabric, drape, yield, manufacturing requirements, all of it.

His first prototype came from fabric we sourced in the garment district, and it was quite the rough draft to say the least. But it told us exactly how much we still had to learn.

From there, we attended fabric and sourcing shows, learning deep knowledge about material differences which helped enable us to find better fabrics. We had multiple fit sessions with a good friend who became "Waldruh's standard fit". Those sessions produced new samples, new iterations, each time fine-tuning the fit until the specs were right across the board. In those sessions, we tried different fabrics, different pattern cuts, but always asked the same question: how would we want this to fit us.

We reviewed hundreds of swatches and tested how finished fabrics held up after fifty washes. We had to reverse engineer the product we wanted to make. Every trim, button, zipper, thread, label, and piece of packaging went through the same process, fine-tuning over and over.

Through trade shows, we built relationships with mills and manufacturers, each one with its own vetting, its own back and forth, its own rounds of samples before anything was ready. Along the way we sorted out logistical challenges most people never see.

This took years, not months. Sourcing is expensive. Samples are expensive. Shipping is expensive. But we're proud to say Waldruh is a completely self-funded venture. Everything we produce was funded ourselves, without outside investment. We didn't want to have financial obligations dictating decisions or forcing shortcuts we weren't willing to take. That gave us the room to be patient, to get it right the first time instead of rushing the first version to market.

What we make is entirely ours: original patterns, proprietary construction, fabric sourced and selected by hand from mills in Japan. Nobody else makes what we make, and that's the point.

You can feel the difference between a garment that was designed and one that was sourced out of a box. Simon's fit doesn't fade after a season, it holds. The fabric doesn't lose its structure after year one, it wears the way the mill sample did the day we approved it. That's not marketing. That's what four years of getting it right actually buys you.
